DIY Floral Votives
I love the look of pressed flowers, and lately I’ve been looking for ways to display them around my home. I’ve seen beautiful floral ice buckets (essentially flowers, petals, and leaves frozen into ice) floating around the Internet for a while now, but when one popped up on my Pinterest feed the other day, it hit me — I could make a longer lasting version using pressed flowers and glass votive holders!
After putting some thought into it, I decided it would be even easier to print photos of flowers onto transparency paper (I had these done at my local print shop), and then attach those onto the glasses. All four designs are included as downloadable images below — I printed them as-is at 4″ by 10″ to fit my whisky glasses, but feel free to resize them to fit whatever glasses you use. Supplies
-Cutting mat
-Clear tape
-Scissors & washable marker (or craft knife)
-Clear glasses/votive holders
-Floral downloads (1, 2, 3, 4) printed on transparency paper
Instructions
Step 1: Start by making sure your glasses (I used whisky glasses, plain jam jars, and juice glasses) are clean and dust-free. Lay the floral transparency onto the glass and shift it around until you are happy with the placement. (My glasses all had a slight angle to them, so the flowers didn’t quite sit evenly on all sides — you can avoid this by using perfect cylinder glassware.)
Step 2: Tape the transparency in place, the first edge onto the glass, and then tape the second edge back onto the transparency itself. Depending on the size of your glasses, you may want to trim away any spots where the flowers overlap. The seam is barely noticeable in person, but I treated this side as the back when arranging them.
Step 3: Use a craft knife to cut away the excess transparency on the bottom of the glass, keeping the blade touching the glass while cutting slowly and carefully. (Alternately, if you’re not comfortable with a craft knife, instead use a washable marker and ruler to draw the shape you need to cover your glass and then cut out with scissors, wiping off any visible marks after.)
Step 4: Do the same for the top of the glass, and voila! Repeat using other glasses and patterns.
Note: To clean votives, wipe with a damp cloth.
